The State of the Lateran Territories (in portuguese: Estado dos Territórios Lateranos), or Lateran State (in portuguese: Estado Laterano), is a derivatist micronation located in the Vale do Ivaí, Brazil. Its territories are constituted by two buildings, with 220m² each, that house seven citizens. It was founded by César David de Médici on 26 February 2020 and it's member of the Conference of Santiago. In 15 May 2020, was incorporated to Karnia-Ruthenia through the Agreement of St. Olav, and achieved its independence on 12 August 2021, through the Treaty of Víden.

History[edit | edit source]

The Lateran State is a derivatist micronation located in the Vale do Ivaí. It is an enclave, completely surrounded by Brazil. Its territories are two buildings, with 220m² each, which house seven citizens. These buildings, called Main Residence and Old Residence, form an independent and sovereign unit. The Old Residence has belonged to the princely family for about forty years. The Main Residence, however, is a more recent acquisition, only two years old. It was in the latter that César David de Médici drafted and promulgated the Fundamental Law of the State of the Lateran Territories, where he declared his independence, on 26 February 2020.

On 29 February, the Prince-Protector approved the Constitutional Charter, an extension of the Fundamental Law, which addresses the structural points of the government.

The Lateran State was involved in the diplomatic conflicts that happened between March and April 2020, between the Lusophone Sector and the signatories of the Treaty of Persenburg of the Brazilian Sector. The main conflict was the Santiago-Mansean Conflict, where Ebenthal, Sildavia and the Lateran State took a strong stand against Lusophones to defend the derivatism over terrorists within the Lusophone sector.

After helping to found the Conference of Santiago, the Lateran State started to have two main focuses: the structuring of the State and the development of a strong diplomacy.

On May 2020, considering his personal interests and his political aptitudes, the founder, César David, contacted the Karno-Ruthenian Government to surrender Lateran sovereignty to the Empire, what was received with surprise by the Government of Persenburg, but accepted. On 06 July, the Saint Olaf Agreement was signed]], and the Lateran State was annexed by Karnia-Ruthenia, while the Lateran Order was recognized as a secular order with access to the Conference of Santiago and headquartered in the United Provinces of Mauritia.

On 12 August 2021, the Treaty of Víden was signed between Emperor-King Oscar of Karnia-Ruthenia, King Arthur II of Ebenthal and King Fernando of Roschfallen in which it was agreed that the Lateran State would become independent again under the auspices of the Kingdom of Ebenthal, while Roschfallen, under the protection of Karnia-Ruthenia would join the Imperial Circle and eventually join the Conference of Santiago.[1] The was turned public in a very sensitive time, at the week following Empire Day in Karnia-Ruthenia and a day after the Treaty of Leige, that proclaimed Carpathia and Letzembourg independent.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Geographically, the Lateran State had no coastal area and is an enclave, being an independent and sovereign State. It shared 120 meters of border with Brazil. It was fundamentally urban and none of the land was reserved for agriculture or other exploitation of natural resources.

After the signature of the Treaty of Víden, the change of sphere of influence, from Karno-Ruthenian to Ebenthali eventually led to a dramatic territorial change. For the first time, the Nomadic Micronation Theory was used in Karno-Ruthenian affairs and, as result, the location of the Lateran State changed from Vale do Ivaí to Rio de Janeiro.

Religion[edit | edit source]

Religiously, the Lateran State adopts Roman Apostolic Catholicism as its official religion, having Saint Peter as its patron. However, other religions obtain free permission to worship.

Since May 2020, the Lateran State recognized the ICM (Micronational Catholic Church, in portuguese Igreja Católica no Micronacionalismo) as the true and only representation of the catholicism in Brazilian Micronationalism.

Politics[edit | edit source]

Politically, the Lateran State is an elective absolute monarchy. The Head of State is the Bishop of Rome, the Holy Pope, who has symbolic and legitimate power. The Head of Government and leader de facto is the Prince-Protector and Regent, who holds the executive, legislative and judicial powers. However, advisors can be appointed to make decisions on his behalf. This political structure makes the Lateran State the only micronation of the Brazilian Sector to recognize a macronational figure as Head of State.

In international politics, the Lateran State is one of the constituents of the Brazilian Sector. It is aligned with derivatism, being one of the original signatories to the Treaty of Persenburg and one of the founding members of the Conference of Santiago.

Since May 2020, the Lateran State it started to issue the title of "Friendly Micronations", that is, Micronations that have a strong diplomatic relationship with the Lateran State and that contributed to its formation. The title was awarded to several allied micronations, such as Karnia-Ruthenia, Ebenthal and Villa Alicia.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of the Lateran State is extremely liberal, with public coffers supplied only by the income of the Prince-Protector, without any type of taxes on the population. All inhabitants work in Brazil, including the Prince-Protector.
